Abstract: We will look first at the conditions required for vocabulary learning to occur and how teachers can help set up these conditions for their learners. The conditions cover both incidental and deliberate learning and include noticing, retrieval, varied meetings and varied use and elaboration.
We will also look at Zipf’s law and how it affects vocabulary learning, examining its effect on quantity of input, the preparation of graded material and extensive reading. In many ways, supporting vocabulary learning is a battle against Zipf’s Law, and the session provides clear guidelines on how to do this.
The Picture Vocabulary Size Test is a computer-administered multiple-choice test that measures knowledge of the most frequent 6000 words of English for young children. We will look at the test and show how it might contribute to research on first and second language vocabulary growth.
